Edward Tingatinga originated this unique style
of brightly colored figurative painting in Dar Es
Salaam in the early 70's. After his untimely death
at the age of 40 in 1972, the tradition was carried
on by his students, who ultimately formed the
Tingatinga Arts Co-operative in 1990. Tingatinga
paintings have been exhibited in many European
countries as well as Japan.
